The filmmaker will be honored with a lifetime achievement prize at the 2013 German Film Awards ceremony, which takes place in Berlin on April 26.

Herzog, who has previously won four prizes at the annual bash, insists he is “delighted” by the accolade, calling it “the highest honor that one can receive in German cinema.”

“Werner Herzog has not only made some of the most important and original films of the New German Cinema’s school, with several of his film titles he also enriched our country’s vocabulary,” Academy Jury president Iris Berben said in a statement. “As a visionary film artist with a never subsiding courage he has remained on the move and in addition to several great feature films has newly defined the boundaries of the documentary.”
